Mary Ann Shepherd Odell 1908 ~ 2007

Mary Ann died January 24th in her home among loved ones. She was extremely proud of her early Utah roots and loved Salt Lake City where she was born. A fond memory of youth was seeing Rudolph Valentino at Saltair.

She married George Odell in 1926. Her early married years were spent in Park City at the Silver King Mine. Later, as her husband worked for the airlines, she lived in many states and also spent a year in Rome, Italy.

Her interest in interior design began with her great love of Aunt Marie Odell Bamberger's home and later her experiences in Italy. From the elegance of fine carved woods, Carrara marble and Murano glass, to the fun of thrift store finds, all were creatively harmonized. She could always be seen happily working with hammer, nails, paintbrush, and fabric.

Later in life, she scaled down to miniature houses and won an award for the "Villa Cristina." She also learned the keyboard and composed her "Clean Air Song."

She was always kind, gentle, and appreciative. She tirelessly cared for her Aunt Josie during her last illness. She praised the beauty of creation - mountains, moon, animals, and the joy of art. Her charity of choice was the Humane Society.

She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Shepherd, noted composer; mother, Hattie Hooper Jennings; husband, George Odell; son, Thomas Odell; and three brothers, Arthur, Richard, and little William (Buster).

She is survived by her sister, Terry Colvin; brother, Peter Shepherd; son, John Arthur Odell; daughter, Marie Odell Grossi; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchil-dren; and several step-grandchil-dren. We love her, miss her, and are enriched by her life.

Special thanks to Maurice, Melissa, Sonnie "Blue Eyes," Cristina, Josie, Rommy, Marie, Art, and all at Good Shepherd Hospice for love and care this past year.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. January 30th at Salt Lake City Cemetery. Friends and family may gather prior to that from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple.
