Son of John Everette and Lucretia Ray Cope. He moved from Sterling City to Fort Stockton in 1900, and served as Deputy Sheriff in Pecos County for 35 years. Wiliam married Mary Isabelle Backus in 1912. Surviving him is a son, John E. Cope; three grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was 84.
