Mary Cleveland Bigelow Soutter
July 24, 1909 - April 27, 2007
Mary Cleveland Bigelow Soutter, 97, of Concord and Cohasset, died Friday, April 27, 2007 at her Concord home. She was the beloved wife of 50 years of the late Dr. Lamar Soutter, and the sister of the late Dr. Frederick S. Bigelow, Elizabeth Perkins Bigelow and Henry Bigelow.
Born in Concord July 24, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Henry Bryant Bigelow and Elizabeth Perkins Shattuck Bigelow. She was a graduate of Concord Academy and later of Radcliffe College in Cambridge, where she majored in Art History.
A great adventurer, during her early years she spent many hours sailing the coastal waters of New England with her friends aboard her 30' sloop. Her love of sailing and the ocean continued throughout her life and was passed on to her children and grandchildren.
Despite being a lifelong pacifist, she served as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II.
Shortly after her 1948 marriage to Dr. Soutter they moved to Dedham, where they raised their three children. She served as president of the Dedham Visiting Nurses Association, and the Women's Auxiliary of the Easter Seals Society. She also was a long time member of the Chilton Club of Boston and a member of the Dedham Country and Polo Club.
She returned to Concord in 1969 where she volunteered for the Concord Council on Aging and the League of Women Voters.
A lifelong gardener, conservationist and nature lover, in 1993 Mrs. Soutter donated to the town of Concord many acres along the Concord River, later called the Soutter Fields and Bigelow Woods.
Survivors include her son, Nicholas B. Soutter and his wife Diane Reed of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two daughters: Elizabeth S. Smith and her husband Gerald of Carlisle, Massachusetts, and Sarah B. Soutter and her husband David Cosman of Bainbridge Island, Washington. She also is survived by six grandchildren: Nicholas Lamar Soutter and Elizabeth Bigelow Soutter Schwarzer, Bryant Smith, Caranine Bigelow Smith, Lindsay Quezada, and Ian Soutter Cosman and four great-grandchildren: Mary Bigelow and Karenna Schwarzer, and Kyle and Isaac Smith.
A memorial service will be held Monday May 14th at 10 a.m. at the First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road, Concord Center.
A private interment will take place in the family burial plot, Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
