DIED---at his home, two and one half miles southwest of this city (La Harpe, IL) at one o'clock Sunday Morning, December 16, 1900, Mr. Green Smiddy age 80 years and 8 months.
Our people were astounded at the announcement of Mr. Smiddy's death as he was seen in his usual health and in the city the day before. It was afterwards learned that his sickness was of but and hours duration. Mr. and Mrs. Smiddy were alone that night and he had been reading and not yet retired when he called to his wife and told her of his great distress in his breast. Finding him in the greatest agony, she dressed hurriedly and went to the nearest neighbor, Mr. Luther James, and by the time she returned he was beyond help and died a short time after.
Green Smiddy was born in White County, Tennessee on April 15, 1820. He came to this vicinity in October 1837. He was married to Miss Marager Houston on August 18, 1842. Ten children were born to them, five of whom and their mother are dead. He was again married to Mrs. Martha E. Hutchinson in November 1868. Four children were born to this union, three of whom preceeded him in death. The living children are Andrew of Colusa, IL, Elizabeth Douglas, Martha DeHaven and Calvin of LaHarpe, IL and George W. of Ft. Madison, IA. He was the father of fourteen children, seventeen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Mr. Smiddy resided in this vicinity for sixty-three years and in all that time it can be said that he was a good, kind neighbor, honest and upright in all his dealings and generous to those in need. He professed religion in 1875, joining the Christian Church at East Durham and a few years since removing his membership to the La Harpe Church of that denomination. He has been a faithful member and consistent, living up to his obligations at all times.
Funeral services were held at the church, Tuesday at 11 o'clock a.m. The attendance was very large, beyond the seating capacity of the church. The burial was at the Reggins graveyard, two miles west of the city. A good man has gone. His kindly acts will live after him.
