Baptized Glemsford, Suffolk, 9 September 1605, son of Edward Scott. (In his will of 9 September 1640, "George Scott of London, merchant," referred to "my dear loving father Edward Scott the elder of Glemsford in the County of Suffolk, clothier," and made a bequest to "my brother Richard Scott now resident in New England." In his will of 26 December 1642, Edward Scott of Glemsford, clothier, included bequests to "James Scott, eldest son of Richard Scott, my son," to "John Scott, second son of Richard Scott, my son," and to "the children of my said son Richard Scott, born or to be born, his said two sons James Scott and John Scott excepted.")
Shoemaker from Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1634. First settled in Boston; moved to Providence in 1638. Died by 1 July 1679.
Married at Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, 7 June 1632, Katherine Marbury, daughter of Francis and Bridget (Dryden) Marbury. "Katharine Scott, aged 70 years, widow of Richard, Providence, died at Newport, May 2, 1687."
Richard Scott was briefly associated with Roger Williams when the latter was a Baptist. Scott and other members of his family later became Quakers.
Richard Scott was second cousin of the wives of THOMAS BLOWER {1635, Boston}, EDMUND RICE {1639, Sudbury} and PHILEMON WHALE {1640, Sudbury} (assuming that the Edward Scott who died testate at Glemsford in 1627 was grandfather of the immigrant Richard Scott.
Austin claimed that this immigrant sailed to New England on the "Griffin." This would seem plausible, as that ship did carry the family of Anne (Marbury) Hutchinson, Scott's sister-in-law. This cannot be, however, as the Griffin arrived at Boston on 18 September 1634 and Scott had been admitted to Boston church on 28 August 1634.
