Obituaries: Great Falls Area (MT) - October 22, 2000

JOPLIN - Frances Leone (Freeland) Tempel, 78, died of natural causes Friday at her home in Lakeside.

Her funeral is 2 p.m. Monday at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Joplin, with burial in Joplin Cemetery. Rockman Funeral Chapel of Chester is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Lakeside Quick Response Unit Liberty County Hospital in Chester or Joplin Memorial Park.

She was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Hatton, N.D., and grew up in Joplin. She graduated from Joplin High School in 1940 and worked at the Buttrey store in Havre and the grocery store in Joplin.

She married John F. Tempel Feb. 14, 1946, in Shelby. They lived on the Tempel family farm north of Joplin for more than 30 years, where she was a farmwife, homemaker and mother of seven children.

After she and her husband retired from farming in 1978, they moved to their home on Flathead Lake. They lived there until 1996, then moved to a home in Lakeside. They had spent winters in Apache Junction, Ariz., since 1986.

She was a member of the Immanuel Church north of Joplin, where she was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher for many years, and also attended Bethel and Eidsvold Lutheran churches. She was also a member of the Chester Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, playing cards, reading, watching television, camping, traveling in their motor home, and collecting rocks and coins. She crocheted afghans for all her children and grandchildren and enjoyed family gatherings, particularly those at the lake.

She was a Cub Scout den mother when her sons were young and is remembered for never missing school functions and special events in her children's lives. She loved to have company, especially her grandchildren, and was known for her "Gramma" philosophy of "Spoil the grandkids and then send them home!"

A highlight of her life was in 1996, when her children surprised her and her husband with a 50th wedding anniversary celebration in Las Vegas.

Survivors include her husband of Lakeside her children, Linda Moore of Butte, Butch Tempel and Tim Tempel of Joplin, Dolores Cicon of Chester, Rod Tempel of Libby, Joan Thompson of Anchorage, Alaska, and Scott Tempel of Missoula 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren
