MERKLEY YOUTH SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES SUSTAINED IN FALL SECTION

Funeral services were conducted Monday at 10 a.m. in the Maeser Ward chapel for Deloy Lewis Merkley, 13, who died Friday afternoon, June 30 at the Uintah County Hospital, Vernal, from interenal injuries suffered June 21, when he was thrown from a hay rake in Jensen.

Deloy was spending the summer with his sister and brother-in-law Mary Nell and Meril Snow at Jensen. He was moving the rake from one field to another when the team bolted throwing him beneath the wheel, which passed over his abdomen.

He was born in Vernal March 30, 1937, a son of John Golden and Marcel Swensen Merkley. Before moving to Sandy with his parents last November, he attended school at Maeser and had been a student at Valley District since then. He was a deacon in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Bishop Harvey McKee presided over the funeral services.

Prayer at the home was by Bishop McKee. A quartet consisting of Joseph Bodily, LeRoy Carroll, John S. Hacking and Leland Carroll sang, "Sometime We'll Understand," accompanied by Mrs. Owen Hacking. Invocation was by Carl Richens. Speakers were W. E. Bodily, Harmon Sowards and Bishop Rell Swensen of Taylorsville Ward, Salt Lake City. Mrs. Hacking rendered an organ solo Corwin Snow sang, "Whispering Hope," accompanied by Mrs. George Wall, Mrs. Elbert Smith and Mrs. Cortland Hancock, sang "In the Garden," accompanied by Clyde Merkley. Benediction was by Bart Merkley, an uncle of the deceased.

Pallbearers were Lorin, Dean and Roland Merkley, Nyle Bigelow, Rulon Hacking and Keith Ashby. Honorary pallbearers were Ivan and Dee Hall, George D. Merkley, Roger Hacking, Carl Jenkins, Blaine Palmer, Stephen Case, Duane Holfeltz and Thoral Bodily.

Burial was in the Tridell Cemetery under the direction of J. Arben Jolley of the Vernal Mortuary. William K. Harvey, member of the Tridell Bishopric dedicated the grave.

Survivors include his parents, six sisters, Mrs. Max Bergner, Vavaville, California; Mrs. William Jensen, Holliday; Mrs. Pat Tucker, Hawkins, Texas; Mrs. Meril Snow, Jensen; Mrs. Dallas Goodrich, Maeser and Nila Merkley, Salt Lake City; two brothers, Don Merkley, Grand Junction and Kenneth Merkley, Salt Lake City.

Attending the services from outside points were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don Merkley, Mr. and Mrs. Max Bergner, Mr. and Mrs. William Jensen, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Tucker, Kenneth and Nila Merkley, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Garringer, Taylorsville; Mr. and Mrs. Taylor, Bridgeland, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Harrison, Salt Lake City; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bigelow, Lapoint; Mr. and Mrs. Ozwald Swenson and Rell Swenson and son, Taylorsville; Mrs. Nola Parker and children, Murray; Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd Thorsen, Glenwood, Utah; Mr. and Mrs. Cortland Hancock, Oakland, California.

MERKLEY YOUTH'S CONDITION STILL 'SERIOUS'

Deloy Merkley, 13 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Golden Merkley of Salt Lake City, who until last Autumn were residents of Vernal, Wednesday morning still in serious condition at the Uintah County hospital, where he was confined June 22 from injuries sustained the day before after the wheel of a hay rake had passed over his abdomen. He is suffering from severe shock and internal injuries.

The Merkley youth was in Jensen working for a brother-in-law, Merrill Snow. He was raking when the horse ran away jerking him from the seat and throwing him beneath the wheel.

Due to the extent of internal injuries, they were unable to remove the boy to the hospital until the day following the accident occurance.

In Vernal, he was staying with an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Bart Merkley. His parents were at his side Wednesday.
