Birth: Jan. 28, 1855, Finland
Death: Jun. 30, 1904
Haugen
Barron County
Wisconsin, USA

My Great-Great Grandfather. Mathias (Matts) Leander Kurten was born on 28 January 1855 in Karlby, Central Ostrobothnia, Finland. He was a sailor and a carpenter. In 1876 he married Wilhelmina (Mina) Anna Bergman, from the Finstrom district of Aland, a group of islands located in the Baltic between Sweden and Finland. The couple had one child, a daugther, Anna Maria. In 1892 father and daughter emigrated to America aboard the SS Gallia, arriving in New York harbor on June 10. The plan was to establish a homestead, then return for Mina. This process took 6 years, but with Anna married and settled on a farm in Wisconsin, Matts returned to Aland for his wife and they arrived in America in 1898. By this time Anna and husband Alfred had made the couple Grandparents twice (they would do so 10 more times!). Unfortunately, Grandpa Kurten died just 6 years later in 1904.
