Alice Rutherfurd was the daughter of the New York social figure Winthrop Chanler Rutherfurd (1862-1944) and Alice Morton Rutherfurd (1879-1917). Her father, Winthrop was the son of Lewis Morris Rutherfurd (1816-1892) a know astronomer and Margaret Chanler Stuyvesant Rutherfurd. Her mother Alice Morton Rutherfurd was the fourth daughter of Levi P. Morton (1824-1920) and Anna Livingston Street Morton (1846-1918). Levi P. Morton was the U.S. Vice President under U.S. President Benjamin Harrison from 1889-1893 and Governor of New York from 1895-1897.
Winthrop and Alice had six children: Winthrop, John, Hugo, Guy, Lewis Morton, and Alice. The family lived in New York City in addition to having estates in Allamuchy, New Jersey and Aiken, South Carolina.
Her mother, Alice Morton Rutherfurd died suddenly on June 19, 1917 from an appendicitis, leaving her six children. Young Alice was only 4 years old. Her father, Winthrop hired Lucy Page Mercer as governess for the children. Winthrop and Lucy would later marry in 1920. On the eve of their wedding Winthrop's son, Lewis Morton Rutherfurd died at the home of his grandfather, Levi P. Morton, in Washington, DC. Lucy was a very devoted wife and step mother. Winthrop and Lucy had one daughter, Barbara Mercer Rutherfurd (Knowles).
On December 11, 1931 Alice Rutherfurd was presented by her father and step-mother at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York.
Alice Rutherfurd died on May 21, 1953 and was laid to rest in the Rutherfurd family plot, Tranquility Cemetery, Tranquility, New Jersey near the family's Allamuchy estate in New Jersey.
