Funeral services were held at the Marvin Chapel Methodist church Sunday afternoon, January 16, for Pfc. L.C. Cummings whose body was recently returned to this county from a military cemetery in Europe. The Rev. Floyd V. Brower conducted the final rites and a military service was held by members of the American Legion, V.F.W. and National Guard. Interment was in Maple cemetery, with H.S. Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Pfc. Cummings was born January 7, 1919, at Stubtown, Mo. and lived nearly all of his life in this community. He attended the Marvin Chapel school and later engaged in farming with his father. He was a member of and faithfully attended, the Marvin Chapel church. In December of 1936 he was married to Miss Hattie Winkles and one son, Gene Allen was born to them.
In April 1938, he joined the National Guard and entered the regular Army when the guard was mobilized in 1940, spending one year at Camp Robinson, Ark., later being transferred to the California coast.
He underwent an operation in an Army hospital and was offered a discharge from the service, which he refused. In March of 1944 he was sent to North Africa and later to Italy and France, where he was killed in action on August 16, 1944. He was aged 25 years, 8 months and 9 days.
Pfc. Cummings is survived by his son, now living at Phil Campbell, Ala.; four brothers, Hershel and Odis Cummings of Caruthersville; Adell Cummings, Kennett and Winford Cummings, St. Louis; three sisters, Mrs. Flora Mitchell and Mrs. Daisy Treece, St. Louis and Mrs. Pauline Simpson, Harrisburg, Ark.; five half-brothers, Will, J.R., Lon, John and Lum Cummings, all of Russelville, Ala.; three half-sisters, Mrs. Tiney Latham and Mrs. Minnie Dabois, both of Russelville and Mrs. Ida Howard, Benton Harbor, Mich.
