He married Leah ? and fathered Charles (b. @1831), Barbara (b. @1837), Harriet (b. @1839), William H. (b. 06/16/41 - 76th Pa Inf), George (10/01/43 - 76th Pa), and Mary (b. @1847). In 1860, he was a laborer living in Littlestown, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 6' 1" tall with sandy hair and blue eyes.
In 1833, he enlisted in the army, served with Co. E, 6th U.S. Infantry, and honorably discharged in 1838 at Lancaster. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted October 16, 1862, as a substitute for Edward Rebert, understating his age by nine years, and mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 14 as a private with Co. E, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). He rose to the rank of sergeant and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg.
