THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT
Thursday, June 10, 1915
Mrs. Ellen Boyd was born in Albemarle county, Virginia, June 26, 1833. She was one of five children, two of whom died in early life. Two sisters survive her, Mrs. Lucretia M. Boyd, of Greenfield, Ohio, and Mrs. Mildred Ogle of Columbus, Ohio.
She was united in marriage to William Johnson Boyd, at Greenfield, Ohio, November 1, 1853. To this union were born twelve children - Edith G. Murray, of Russell, Iowa; Annie E. Allen, of Russell; William T. Boyd, of Ottumwa, Iowa; Gaston S. Boyd, of Russell; John M. Boyd, of Russell; Russell A. Boyd, of Mission, Texas; Charles C. Boyd, of Alton, Iowa; Arthur D. Boyd, of Russell; Herbert Boyd, of Russell; and Samuel N. Boyd, of Ackworth, Iowa. Two children, James C., and Cordelia E. Boyd, died in infancy. There are 27 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In 1855, she and her husband and little daughter, Edith, moved to Iowa, locating at Pittsburg in Van Buren county, where William T. Boyd, the eldest son was born in 1856. The father, about this time, was taken down with ague and became almost helpless, then developed that bravery that brought forth the tender love of devoted wife and mother, who knew not how to fear and falter in times of trouble. With the father weakened to helplessness and delirious with fever each alternate day, she drove a covered wagon from Iowa to Missouri and thence back to Ohio - 1200 miles with two little children and a sick husband to care for would frighten any but the bravest of women.
Shortly after returning to Ohio they went on to the old Boyd homestead near Greenfield, Ohio, where most of the family were reared. Again, in July 1890, they came to Iowa, where she has lived until the 22nd of May, 1915, when at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 26 days she went to her rest. The husband preceded her to the better land, he having passed away May 13, 1897, at Russell, Iowa.
The members of the family with the exception of R. A. Boyd, of Mission, Texas, were present at the funeral. She united with the Methodist church more than sixty years ago, living a devoted christian life in all that the word implies. We who knew her best can testify to the purity of life and character of her whom we this day mourn.
Largely attended funeral services were conducted at the M. E. church Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. by Rev. M. E. Goodrich, after which the remains were gently laid to rest in the Russell cemetery.
