Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. When the Civil War broke out, he joined the 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and quickly rose through the ranks. With the formation of the 32nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry in September of 1862, he was selected to be Captain of Company A. The unit moved through Mississippi on Major General Ulysses S. Grant's central Mississippi campaign and continued through Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. Charles DeGroat continued to be promoted and to assume more responsibility of command. On July 24, 1864, as the unit was about to begin the Atlanta campaign, he was appointed Colonel and commander of the 32nd Wisconsin. He led the unit during the Siege of Atlanta, the celebrated March to the Sea, the Battle of Bentonville, and the surrender of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston forces in April 1865. On March 13, 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services during the recent campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas." After the war, he was a manufacturer of engines, mill machinery, and farm equipment.
