May 11, Monday, Zeno very bad with diptheria, feel so anxious about the children getting it. Kathe seems so well and is so cute and we take the greatest comfort with her. She is just beginning to talk and is so interesting and is more affectionate than any of my children, so patient and kind. She comes into the office and climbs on my lap and puts her little hands on my face and squeezes my face and kisses me and says "Papa me wants a nanna" meaning a banana, she is so fond of them that I take much pleasure in getting them for her. She is a great comfort to me as I am away from the other children.
May 17, Sunday, Zeno getting better but dear little Kathe is sick. Moneta and Jennie seem to be all right. We are so worried about Kathe.
May 24, Sunday, Deming, Kathe still quite sick feel very anxious about her. Other children all well.
May 31, Sunday, Kathe very sick.
June 1, Monday, Dear little Kathe very low full of pain and weak gives me great pain to see her suffer. Feel as though it is more than I can bear, doing everything we can for her. Dr. Stovall came to see her. Bro Elijah Pomeroy has indeed been a friend in need, staid with us night and day and helped us watch dear little Kathe.
June 2, Tuesday, Oh Lord I feel to plead whit Thee for the life of my dear little Kathe. I cannot bear to see her suffer, the dear little soul is so patient and sweet. About 3 PM I felt I could no longer bear the sight of seeing her suffer so and hear the dear little soul moan as she did and I told Lucy we had better give her up and ask the lord to relieve her and if it was his will to take her as well and although it nearly broke my heart I pleaded with Lucy to feel as I did. She consented at last, when I called in Elmer, Bro. Smith and Pomeroy and we didicated her to the Lord and in a moment she was dead. I cannot ill describe our feelings of grief and loneliness being away from home and friends.
June 3, Wednesday, The piople of Deming showed me every kindness. Got a beautiful white casket to put the dear little body in now so thin and cold. Beautiful flowers she loved so well in life we laid on her heart and casket. Buried the dear little one to rest in the Deming Cemetery without any services but a simple prayer when we covered her with earth. Lucy bears up well and tries to comfort me all she can.
