Enlisted in Troop CC Cavalry, May/ June 1898, Brooklyn, NY. Transferred , June 11, 1898, to Troop C, NY Volunteer Cavalry ( Camp Alger, VA ),for service in the Spanish American War. After training at Camp Alger, Troop C shipped out for Puerto Rico, July 28, 1898, aboard the transport Massachusetts, from Newport News, VA. Landing ashore at Playa, port of Ponce, PR, August 4, 1898. Participating in the Puerto Rico campaign and saw combat at Coamo and Asomante, along side his brother Charles.

Troop C returned to the States September 10, 1898, aboard the transport Mississippi, docking at Jersey City, NJ. The City of Brooklyn gave a " Welcome Home Parade " for Troop C, on October 1, 1898. Discharged from volunteer service, Nov. 25, 1898, Brooklyn, NY.
