Charles M. Van Vleck, 69, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Dubuque and Des Plaines, Ill., passed away Monday, June 22, 2009, at University of Nebraska Hospital and Medical Center, Omaha.
He strongly supported the advancement of medical research and study. His body was donated to the Anatomy College of Medicine, University of Nebraska. Private family services and burial will be held at a later date.
He was born on May 8, 1940, in Dubuque, son of Earl and Delphine (Theisen) Van Vleck. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1958.
Charles served in the Navy from 1958 to 1968, aboard the Naval ships SS Brinkley Bass DD887, SS Theodore E. Chandler DD717, SS Ashtabula AO51 and the SS Wiltsie DD716. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, with a Bronze Star, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the National Defense Medal.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he held positions with Park Ridge High School, Park Ridge, Ill., and Des Plaines High School.
Following his retirement, he resided in Omaha.
Surviving are a brother, Elwood (Elaine) Van Vleck, and a sister, Joyce Sanders, both of Dubuque; a brother-in-law, Joe Behnke, of Hazel Green, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Delphine Van Vleck; his paternal grandparents, Byron and Katherine (Egelhof) Van Vleck; maternal grandparents, Matt and Helena Theisen; a sister, Joy Behnke; a brother-in-law, Willard "Bill" Sanders; and a niece, Cynthia Sanders, in infancy.
