Caleb R. (Uncle Cad) Hazel died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Alice Stump near Kennett, yesterday morning, Oct. 13 , about 10 o'clock after an illness of several weeks, immediate cause of his death being a stroke of appolexy he suffered on the 7th inst. For a number of years he had been suffering from diabetes and since about the first of the present year he had sustained slight apoplectic attacks, that of last Tuesday being the third.
Mr. Hazel was born Jan. 25, 1865, near Sturgis, Union county, Kentucky, and was aged more that 65 years at the time of his death. He grew to manhood in the neighboring state, but came to Southeast Missouri more than 40 years ago, residing first in Dunklin county and later spending many years in Pemiscot mostly in Caruthersville. He followed farming for several years in the adjacent county, for the greater part of his active life was engaged in the buying and selling of mules, being a partner with E.A. Shaw in the C.R. Hazel Mule Company here for the past several years. He spent some time in Memphis also during his active career and was the original founder of the Union Stockyards there we are told. He was a good business man and his creed of life was honesty, fair dealing and a kindly consideration for the rights and prerogatives of every one with whom he came in contact. This atitude won for him a great host of friends wherever he was known and while he was never affiliated with any church or any fraternal organization, no one had a better standing in the community where he lived or a deeper respect or greater esteem on the part of the people who knew him well.
Mr. Hazel is survived by four sisters of his immediate family, who are Mrs. Alice Stump of Kennett, Mrs. Matilda Quartermous of Hornersville, Mrs. Isabella Barnaby of Kankakee, Ill., and Mrs. America Reynolds of Sturgis, Ky. Three brothers preceded him in death, being James, Edward and George Hazel, and two children, born of a early marriage, also have passed on, both dying in infancy. In addition to the survivors named a large number of nephews and nieces remain, among them being Messrs. Elmer and Claude Hazel of this city.
The funeral will be from the home of Mrs. Stump, about 1 1/2 miles south of Kennett some time tomorrow afternoon, arrangements not having been quite definitely completed at this time, and interment will be in Oak Ridge cemetery near Kennett, where a brother and other members of the family have been laid to rest.
