Dr. Julian Silecy, M.D., 79, of Florida, formely of Lorain, died Friday at St. Anthony Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida after a sudden illness.
Born in Horodenka, Western Ukraine, he began his higher education in Lvivu, Ukraine and continued in Munich, Germany in 1944.
Dr. Silecky received his doctorate in medicine from Ludwig-Maxjmilians University in Munich, Germany in 1950.
He moved to Lorain in 1954 and began his career serving a two-year surgical internship at Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights. He then served a two-year general residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Lorain.
Following his residency, he started his own medical practice in lorain, retiring in 1988.
He was a member of St. John Ukrainian Church in Lorain and attended St. Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in North Port, Fla., where he resided during the winter months.
Dr. Silecky was also a member of the Ukrainian Medical Association, the Lorain County Medical Association and the American Medical Association.
He was very proud of his heritage and belonged to the Ukrainian National Association, the Ukrainian National Home and the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America.
Dr. Silecy enjoyed teraveling, frequently taking his family to Canada for family gatherings and across the nation during summer vacations. His favorite passtime, however, were playing cards and collecting stamps.
Throughout the past several years, he also was active with the renewal and reconstruction of his hometown of Horodenka, Ukraine.
