John Quincy Hawk was the third of eleven children born to Martha Eleanor "Elen" DeLong and William John Hawk in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

He married Sarah R. Powell on April 8, 1872, and they had five known children: Eli Andrew, Flora Estelle, John William, Ella Mae and Elizabeth Lodema Hawk, all born in the Pennsylvania area.

According to the 1880 and 1900 Census records John's occupation was a coal miner. The 1920 Census shows his occupation as a cobler.

John died at his daughter Flora Eselle's home in Buffalo, New York on October 29, 1931, but was interred in Old Findley Cemetery in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.
