George was born the 4th of 10 children to Dr. James Gilmour and Mary "Polly" Whitley Gilmour, near the Whitley (now a Kentucky state historical site) home. In the 1830's his family left Kentucky and settled in Warren County, Illinois. On 20 Jul 1849, George married Amelia Micham at Hannibal, Missouri. They made their way to California where their only child, George F. Gilmour, was born on 2 Jul 1853. Amelia died in March of the following year, and their son was sent back to Illinois.
George served two terms in the Civil War with the California Infantry. His first enlistment was 5 Nov 1861 at Sacramento, and he was mustered in on 6 Nov 1861 as a private with the Union side in Company F, 5th Infantry Regiment. He was mustered out at Mesilla, New Mexico on 30 Nov. 1864. He re-enlisted as a Veteran with Company C of the California 1st Infantry Battn. Regiment on 15 Dec 1864 and was killed in action on 24 Dec. 1865.
He was initially buried at Los Pinos, New Mexico in Grave 118 section L. His remains were disinterred and reburied in the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
NOTE that the military records incorrectly had his last name as "Gilmore".
