V. Gene Smith 82 of New Paris, Ohio died Monday June 22, 2009 at Reid Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born October 13, 1926 in Fayette County to Clet and Leota Dawson Smith and lived in Richmond before moving to New Paris 23 years ago.
Gene retired from the United States Postal Service working as a Postman after 35 years at the Richmond branch. He was an Army veteran of World War Two serving in the occupation of Japan. He was a member of the New Paris Lodge F.&A.M.
Survivors include his wife Julia Kitchel Smith who he married October 19, 1985, three children Mindy and husband Mike Herold of Merritt Island, Florida, Lisa and husband Al Beckett of Waxhall, North Carolina, and Amy and husband Walker Fowlkes of Richmond.
Three step children Bill and wife Kerri Statzer of Frisco, Texas, Krista and husband Tim Thornsberry of Richmond, and Brent and wife Beverly Statzer of San Antonio, Texas.
Fifteen grandchildren Ryan, Karrah, Wesley, Mitchell, Jason, Mandy, Katie, Evan, Briannan, Kristin, David, Hollie, Jacob, Christopher, and Zachary, five great grandchildren, one brother Charles and wife Vivian Smith of Connersville, nieces and nephews.
Gene is preceded in death by his first wife Donna, one daughter Angela Smith, one granddaughter Erin Marie Smith, one sister Helen Bunyard, and three brothers Harold Floyd, and Ed Smith.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday June 26, 2009 at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home with Rev. Randall Harvey officiating. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery with military rites by the Wayne County Honor Guard. Friends may call 4-7 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
