David and his 2 surviving sons, "Park" and Wade, went rabbit hunting on Thanksgiving Day 1908. David led the boys as they crossed from a field over a low fence. As Park went over the top rail, his gun accidentally discharged, striking his father in the back.
David's cause of death was officially listed as "hemorrhage and shock" resulting from the gunshot wound. He died instantly at the scene.
At the time of his death, David was 46 years and 1 month old. He was survived by his wife, Amanda, who later remarried. She passed away in 1941.
