SALLIE (SARA) FRANCES BARTON
Frances, as she was better known, was a daughter of Isaac Newton Barton III, who proudly recorded her birth on page two of his family Bible as follows: Family Births - "Sallie Frances Barton was born 18 November 1889." Sadly she died two years before her father and her death was entered in the said as follows: Page Four, Family Deaths - "Francis Schellin died Thursday, 2 April 1942, age 53."

Her death was recorded at the Ohio Bureau of Vital Statistics as Frances Schellin, a white married female housewife, aged 52y 4m 15d, died at 4:30 a.m. on 2 Apr 1942 at Oak Terrace in Akron, Summit Co., Ohio. Cause of Death: Arterio Sclerosis; contributing cause: Influenza Bronchistis. She was born 18 Nov 1889 in Virginia to Isaac Barton, mother listed as unknown by informant. Burial 4 Apr 1942, Glendale Cemetery. Services provided by The Billow Co., 118 Ash St., Akron. Spouse and informant: Herman Schellin, of Akron [Death Cert. 26334].

She was raised and secured fair education in the common schools of Rockingham county, Virginia. She traveled with her family to Newark, Ohio between 1903 and 1909 where she married John W. Ball, the son of Charles W. Ball and Matilda Hottinger on the 19th day of September 1911. The couple's marriage certificate was recorded in the Licking County Probate Court Marriage Records [1910-13; Vol. 12.190, Cert. 3884]. The couple was blessed by the birth of one daughter, Matilda Frances (Little Frances) Ball. Although she was listed as married and a resident of her parents home on the 1920 Licking County census, her husband John was not included. Frances and her daughter resided within her parents home for the majority of her first thirty-eight years. She married second c.1929, at the age of twenty-nine, Mr. Herman Schellin.

15 Jun 1900 US Census, Linville District, Rockingham Co., Virginia [p8A]. Each born in Virginia as were their parents. BARTON: Isaac N. head 36, married 12 years, born May 1864, occupation farm laborer, can't read or write, rented home. Mohaley A. wife 37, married 12 years, born March 1863, mother of seven children - seven living, can't read or write. Children: John son 12, born Jan 1888, student. Sallie F. daughter 11, born Nov 1888, student. Jacob I. age 9, born Nov 1890, student. William A. age 6, born Jun 1893, student. Mamie A. daughter 4, born in March 1896. Mary A. daughter 2, born Jan 1898. NOTE: Mahala's oldest child, Annie Rebecca Hottinger, born in 1881, was not included on this report.

1910 Her parents resided in Newark City, Licking Co., Ohio, Enumeration District 93. Each born in Virginia. BARTON: Isac N. head 49. Allice wife 49. Jacob I. son 18. William A. son 15. Mamie A. daughter 13. Mary Ann daughter 10. Bertha M. age 8. Earnest son 6. Also in the household -- four non-relatives.

5 Jan 1920 US Census, (324?) North Fifth St, Newark City, Licking Co., Ohio [p3B]. Each born in Virginia, as were their parents. BARTON: Isaac head 58, rents, laborer of odd jobs. Alice wife 59. William son 23, labor out-of-work. Ernest son 16, laborer out-of-work. HOTTINGER: Hattie, sister-in-law 39, single?, laborer at Glass factory. BALL: Frances, daughter 30, married. Matilda granddaughter 7, born in Virginia, father in Ohio, mother in Virginia, student.

10 Apr 1930 US Census, West Chestnut Street, city of Akron, Ward 3, Block 167, Tract A-5 [p14A]. SCHELLIN: Herman head 56, married at 21, born in Germany as were his parents. He was not a naturalized citizen. Rents a home for $32 per month. Occupation: Loads lumber for lumber house. Frances wife 40, married at 39, born in Virginia as were her parents. Max son (from a previous marriage) 22 single, born in Ohio, parents born in Germany, not naturalized. Occupation: Truck driver for a moving company.
