Evelyn Hyde Dunn, 96 years young, passed away Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, in Farmington, Utah.
She was born to Ernest Bertrand and Alice Gertrude Mortensen Hyde on Dec. 5, 1903, in Monticello, San Juan County, Utah.
She spent her early childhood in Monticello and when she was 9 years old, the family moved to Salt Lake City. She attended East High School and graduated from LDS High School and LDS College. In later years she attended Utah State University and attained her bachelor's and master's degrees. She taught elementary school in Bluff, Milford and Corinne, Utah, from 1924 to 1928 and then taught English and Spanish at North Davis Junior High School in Clearfield, and at South Cache High School in Hyrum from 1957 until her retirement in 1967.
She met Emile Craner Dunn in Corinne and they were married on Aug. 15, 1928, in the Salt Lake Temple.
They lived in Logan, Utah, until Emile was called as mission president of the Tongan Mission in the South Pacific, in January, 1936. She spent 10 years in Tonga except for a 14 month period in 1941 to 1943 when she and her children were in New Zealand during the early phases of World War II.
In October, 1947, she returned to Tonga with her husband who was sent to supervise the building of Liahona High School and also as mission president. They were there until August, 1950.
She served as mission president of the Relief Society, Young Women and Primary organizations, as a counselor and board member in the stake Relief Society as well as in the ward Primary and Sunday School. She was active in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers organization.
After retiring, she and Emile served two missions to Rarotonga and two to England for a total of seven years. She spent a total of 20 years in missionary service as well as 11 years as an ordinance worker in the Logan Temple.
After the death of Emile in 1989, she lived with her daughter Karen in Ankara, Turkey. Since then she has lived with her children in Brigham City and Farmington, Utah, Oakland and Downey, Calif., Cumming, Ga., and Sierra Vista, Ariz.
Evelyn is survived by her three children, Emile Hyde (Cleona Elsa Miller) Dunn, Brigham City, Karen (Joseph Layne) Black, Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Ofa (Robert Lee) Lillywhite, Farmington, Utah; 15 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brothers, Ernest Ray Hyde, Leo Mortensen Hyde, J Wendell (Jack) Hyde; and sisters, Vera Pearl Hyde Trayner, Bernice Cornelia Hyde Jones, and Irma Mildred Hyde Robinson, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Allen-Hall Mortuary chapel. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the mortuary. Interment will be in the Logan Cemetery.
