Mary Adelaide Henderson was born on June 25, 1892 in Exeter Township, Monroe County, Michigan to her parents Archibald Henderson and Mary Elizabeth McManus. Reportedly she was born in the town of Carleton, but the birth records just lists Exeter Township. She was the oldest of six children born to her parents. They were all born in Monroe County, Michigan. Her father was a blacksmith.
Both of her parents passed away when they were fairly young. She was about eighteen years old when her father died and she was twenty-one when her mother passed away. She initially went to live with her aunt, Ann (McManus) Brown, in Flint, Michigan in 1910 and she was apparently working as a telephone operator. Several years later she moved to the Detroit area where she got a job as a cook in a boarding house. This is where she met her future husband, James Richard Waggener, Sr. They married on February 23, 1918 in Ecorse, Wayne County, Michigan. Over the next year or so she was living in Detroit with her first daughter Ruth, while her husband was away fighting in World War I.
In about 1922 or 1923 they moved to Royal Oak, Michigan which is about ten miles north of Detroit. They lived the rest of their lives in Royal Oak. They had nine children. She was very much involved with the local Catholic Church, the Shrine of the Little Flower. She remained involved for the rest of her life. She worked very closely with Father Coughlin, while he was the Pastor of the church.
She died on November 18, 1959 in their home in Royal Oak. She is buried in the St. Patrick's Parish Church in Carleton, Monroe County, Michigan.
