Birth: Jan. 29, 1829
Warren County
Tennessee, USA
Death: Jun. 18, 1897
Sonoma County
California, USA

An early immigrant to Sonoma County, Jehu Barnes was a prominent figure in the Petaluma area in the 1850s and afterward and is mentioned in several newspaper and book sources dealing with that era and place. He served at times as a preacher, hence is occasionally referred to in records as "Rev" Barnes. A Southern sympathizer (like many newcomers in California in the 1850s and 60s), Barnes played a part in the then-famous liberation/theft of the "Vigilante" bell from the steeple of the Baptist Church in 1864. He was also a survivor of the notorious steam locomotive explosion at the Petaluma station in 1866, having been on the platform at the time and suffering only minor injuries when several were killed.
