US National, College Swim Coach. He was the head coach of the United States Olympic team in 1988, 1996 and 2000, and an assistant U.S. coach for the 1984, 1992 and 2004 Olympic teams. He was the head men and women's coach at Auburn from 1978 to 1982 and from 2007 through the 2009 season. From 1984 to to 1988 he was the head women's coach at the University of Texas, and the women's head coach at Stanford University from 1988 to 2005. During his coaching career he won a record 13 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) titles, seven with Stanford University, five with the University of Texas, and a men's title at Auburn University. In addition to his coaching duties at Auburn, Stanford and Texas, he also served briefly as the men's head coach at Iowa State University from 1977 to 1978 and the women's head coach at Southern Methodist University from 1976 to 1979. He was an inductee into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2000. Diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer in December 2008, he died from the disease at the age of 66. (bio by: Nils M.
