Frank J. Ivancic Sr., 94, of Amherst Township, died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the home of his daughter Marilyn who was his caregiver.

Born in Lorain September 12, 1914, to the late John F. and Mary (nee Bucar) Ivancic, he was a happy resident of Lorain County for 94 years, and many knew him as "Fritz." He was a 1932 graduate of Clearview High School. Fritz was on the school's basketball team all four years of high school.

From 1942 to 1945 Fritz served with the U.S. Army as a Platoon Sergeant in the 44th Division, 71st Infantry, Company C. He served in the European Theatre (France) and was awarded a Purple Heart, bronze Stars, ETO Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, a Sharp Shooter Medal, and a Good Conduct Ribbon. Throughout his lifetime he attended many reunions of the 44 Infantry Division.

He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, Elyria Township.

He was employed in the Accounting Department of U.S. Steel Lorain Works for 48 years retiring in 1980. Mr Ivancic was a member of United Steelworkers of America Local 1104, Lorain.

Fritz enjoyed fishing, grain farming and vegetable gardening. He was especially known for growing delicious asparagus and concord grapes.
