New London, CT - Alvenia A. (Buntin) Baldwin Gordon, 76, of 125 Jefferson Ave., went home to be with her Lord on June 16, 2009, at The William W. Backus Hospital.
Born June 11, 1933, in Sewickley, Pa, she was the daughter of the late Thelbert O. and Sarah (Griffin) Buntin Sr.
Alvenia, a Mitchell College graduate, worked as a special education teacher in the New London elementary schools for many years. She had a place in her heart for each and every child she worked with. She also was a den mother with the Girl Scouts for many years. She loved the ballet and rollers skating. Her home was open to so many young adults whose lives were in transition. She gave them a peaceful and secure place to stay while they figured out their life plans.
She is survived by her children, Dwight Baldwin of Florida, Aaron Baldwin of New London, Wesley Baldwin of Clinton, and Angela Baldwin of Norwich. She is also survived by a sister, Katherine Hunt of Coraopolis, Pa.; and brothers, Thelbert O. Buntin Jr. of Gales Ferry and Calvin Buntin and Ralph Carter, both of Pittsburgh, Pa. "Granny" as she was affectionately called, also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren to cherish her memory.
A son, Enoch "Nicky" Baldwin; and two sisters, Deloris Buntin and Edith Mae Buntin, preceded her in death.
The funeral service will be held, 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Madry Temple Church, 27 Manwaring St., New London. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Broad St., New London. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London.
