US Congressman. Born in St. Michael, Azores Islands, he immigrated with his parents to the United States, settled in Brooklyn, New York and engaged in mercantile pursuits. With the advent of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and served as 1st Lieutenant in Company B, 7th Regiment, New York State Militia. After the war, he continued to engage in mercantile pursuits, was appointed Brooklyn City Magistrate in 1896 and was a member of the Board of Education of Brooklyn, (1880-89). In 1901, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-seventh Congress, serving until 1903. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed public administrator of Brooklyn, New York, in 1904 and served until his death at age 66. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
