Heart Attack Fatal To P. E. Ayers, Davis Pioneer

P. E. Ayers, 70, pioneer Davis resident, passed away at his home in this city Sunday, Oct. 9, 1949, after a short illness due to heart trouble.

He recently sustained a heart attack and seemed to be overcoming it when fatally stricken. He was well enough to be up town the previous day and retired as usual Saturday night, passing away suddenly about 2 a.m.

Services were held at the Methodist church Wednesday at 10 a.m., delayed pending the arrival of two sons, Ebb and Billy Ayers from California. The pastor, Rev. Herschel W. Hall was assisted in the service by Rev. Geo. L. Hart of the First Baptist church. The song service, consisting of a solo and two duets was provided by Mrs. W. R. Lowry and Mrs. N. L. Hale. The floral contribution was one of the largest seen in our city.

Burial was in Green Hill cemetery with the Bahner funeral home in charge. Six sons, Tom, Jeff, James, Ebb, Billy and Charles, served as pallbearers.

Percy E. Ayers was born in Leighton, Ala., Feb. 1, 1879. He came to Indian Territory about 1902, settling in the vicinity of Davis and spent the remainder of his life here. For awhile he engaged in farming, operated a grocery store, then was a store clerk for many years. Probably for the past 20 years he devoted his time to the care of Green Hill cemetery, which to him was a labor of love. It is fitting that he was laid to eternal rest in these grounds that meant so much to him.

On Nov. 29, 1902, he was married to Miss Annie Hunt. To this union 12 children were born, ten of whom survive. He had been a member of the Methodist church 46 years.

Survivors include his wife, eight sons, Tom of Oklahoma City, Evelyn and Billy of Avenal, Calif., James of Healdton, Fred, Jeff, Ishman and Charles of Davis; two daughters, Mrs. Effie Mae Gargis, Davis, and Mrs. Ellen Crane, Oklahoma City; two brothers and three sisters, Kumpe and Paul Ayers, Mrs. Jewel White, Mrs. Byrd Cagle and Mrs. Lizzie Roberts, all of Moulton, Ala.; 13 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
