Maurice A. Young, 95, formerly of West South Street, died Sunday at United Helpers Nursing Home.
Mr. Young was a union carpenter, working on the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Carry Falls project in South Colton, Barnhart Island, Niagara Falls and Mater Dei College. He retired in 1975 after 13 years with the state Department of Transportation, and then became a self-employed carpenter. In his early years he worked on the family farm and at Cleveland Container Co., Diamond National, and Aluminum Corporation of America, Massena.
Born Sept. 21, 1910, in South Colton, son of Lewis and Sadie Cunningham Young , he attended South Colton schools.
He married Irene Cayey on Sept. 22, 1934, at Ogdensburg First Baptist parsonage, with the Rev. Arthur Kelly officiating. She died April 21, 1992.
Mr. Young was a member of the Baptist Church here and the Carpenters Local Union in Watertown. He enjoyed square dancing until age 88 with the Maple City Swingers, of which he was a charter member.
Surviving are a son and his wife, a sister, four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two nieces and a nephew.
A brother, Clarence, died before him.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fox-McLellan Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter F. Smith officiating. Entombment will follow in Foxwood Memorial Park.
