North Village Merchant Dies at 76
NORTH BENNINGTON - William Clayton Colvin, 76, a merchant in the north village during his lifetime and a well-known auctioneer, died Wednesday at Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington. He had been in frail health for about four months. Mrs. Colvin died a few months ago.
Mr. Colvin was the youngest son of Edwin L. and Ellen (Royce) Colvin, one of the oldest North Bennington families. Born Nov 2, 1889, he had received his education at North Bennington School. During his senior year he went to work for C. H. Houghton & Co. as clerk and route salesman. Later he was a clerk for A. N. Shepard at the A. S. Hathaway Store, remaining there for six years.
In 1915 he went into the grocery business with his brother-in-law, Fred Beagle, under the name of Colvin & Beagle, in a small store on Bank Street Extension. The partnership continued for four years.
In 1919 he built a small store behind his home on Bank Street Extension and dissolved partnership with his brother-in-law and went into business for himself. When his business increased and he needed a larger store, he purchased more land and built a store 30' by 40' with a dance hall upstairs known as Welcome Hall.
Besides being a topflight merchant, he was one of the active auctioneers in the area. He was also a builder, having done masonry and carpentry work for others besides himself.
He had been a longtime member of Taconic Grange No. 491 of Shaftsbury, an honorary member of the Shaftsbury Fire Department and the Bennington County Farm Bureau.
His late wife was the former Katherine Mae LaFlamme, whom he married Nov 10, 1910.
Survivors are six children; two daughters, Mrs. Allen (Dorothy) Ward of Camas, Wash., and Mrs. Ray (Helen) Crosier of North Bennington; four sons, William F. of Bennington, Russell of Amherst, Mass.; Edwin of Shaftsbury and Harold of North Bennington; one brother, Albert Colvin of North Bennington.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 am at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington with interment in the family lot in Grandview Cemetery, North Bennington.
