| Birth: | Oct. 8, 1836 Philadelphia Philadelphia County Pennsylvania, USA | | Death: | Dec. 4, 1894 Jersey City Hudson County New Jersey, USA | 34th and 36th New Jersey Governor. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he practiced law in New York City, New York before settling in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1862. Active in state politics, he served in the New Jersey state legislature from 1864 to 1866 and again from 1869 to 1870, and was chairman of his party's state convention in 1868. He served in the New Jersey state senate from 1875 to 1877 and served two non-consecutive terms as Governor of New Jersey from 1884 to 1887 and again from 1890 to 1893. As governor he became known as a civil rights reformer when in 1884 he protested the refusal of an African-American citizen being buried in an all white cemetery. His leadership led to the passing of the "Negro Burial Law" which made segregated cemeteries illegal. After his two terms as governor he became an Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, sitting on the Court until his death. (bio by: Bigwoo)
