Medical Pioneer, forensic chemist. He began his career in the family malt business, but soon developed an interest in chemistry. He began lecturing at the Bristol Medical and Surgical School in 1828 and became one of its founding professors. He held the post of Professor of Chemistry and Toxicology from 1828 until his death. The general public was allowed to attend his lectures, which proved so popular that they often had to be repeated. In 1836 he demonstrated the application of gas in cookery and he was the first doctor in Bristol to administer a general anaesthetic. He also applied his knowledge to forensic science, and in 1835 helped secure the conviction of Mrs Burdock for poisoning her lodger with arsenic. He went on to give evidence in many subsequent poisoning cases, including the case of William Palmer, the infamous Rugeley poisoner. He died at his home, The United States Manor House, at the age of seventy one.
