Emma was born to James and Amanda Oldham Selman. She was in the 1850 Cherokee County, Texas census with her parents and her older brother George. In 1860, having just turned 17 she married Noah Griffin. Noah and Emma were on the 1861 Tax Rolls in Cherokee County, Texas. Emma gave birth to their first child in 1862, the same year the war began in earnest. Noah signed up in November of 1862 as a Private with Company K of the 4th Texas Cavalry. When the war was over and by 1880 Noah and Emma were in Leon County with six of their seven children: James Acy Greenlee Griffin b 1862; Mary Ella b 1868; Emma Olivia, called “Lena” b 1881; Jasper William b 1872; Noah Jr b 1875; Robert L b. 1876. Roy was not born until 1883. In 1900, the family was still in Jewett, Leon County, Texas. In 1909, Noah Sr passed away and Emma successfully filed for his CSA Pension.
