Tilford was the son of John M Dickerson (1807 - 1894) and Margaret Nave Dickerson (1810 - 1880).

Tilford was born in Sulphur Well, KY about 3 miles southeast of Nicholasville. At the age of 11 in about 1840, the family moved to Versailles, Ripley County, IN. While living in Versailles, Tilford became a noted horseman in southern Indiana and a favorite in racing circles. Tilford moved to Greensburg, IN in 1878 after about 18 years in Versailles where he pursued the horse business on a larger scale sucessfully raising and racing many fameous championship pacers.

According to Ripley County, IN records and his obituary, Tilford married Mary Jane Shook on June, 15, 1854. There exists some confusion concerning Mary Jane Shook in that Tilford's uncle was also named Tilford Dickerson (1810 - 1852) and also lived in Ripley County, IN at the same time. According to county records, the elder Tilford (1810 - 1852) also married a woman named Mary Jane Shook on Feb 26, 1837 who was born abt 1817. It seems inconceivable but not impossible that Mary Jane potentially had two husbands both named Tilford Dickerson marrying the second husband in 1854 who was 12 years her junior after the death of her first husband in 1852.

Tilford had the following siblings:
Jeremiah Dickerson born 1831 in Jessamine County KY and died 1910 in Ripley County IN. His spouse was named Zerelda Kelso whom he married in Ripley Co, IN on June 22, 1854.
W. T. Dickerson (Feb 23, 1837 - Aug 23, 1910) buried at Cliff Hill in Versailles, IN.
Scott Dickerson (Oct 12, 1852 - Sept 10, 1898) buried at Cliff Hill in Versailles, IN.
