Ruth Carter James was a daughter of Captain Robert Carter and Mary Carter (née Lanakin) of Newport, Rhode Island.

She married William James, Mariner, of Newport, Rhode Island 8 November 1809.

Three children were born to this union:

Mary Ann James (later Mrs. Rhodes Arnold)
Elizabeth James (later Mrs. Shubael Cottle Coffin)
Benjamin James

William James was lost at sea off the coast of Virginia in 1819. His widow never remarried and lived near her daughter Elizabeth Coffin in Dartmouth, Massachusetts until her death in 1859. She's buried at the Rural Cemetery in New Bedford at the Coffin family lot along with two of her children; Mary Ann (James) Arnold and Elizabeth (James) Coffin.
