AGENCY, Mo. - Chester Lawrence Barton, 70, of rural Agency, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2003, at his home.

He was born on Dec. 21, 1932, to Johnnie Lawrence and Mary Ellen (Kerns) Barton on the family farm near Frazier, Mo. Chester graduated from Stamper Elementary School, and in 1950, graduated from Gower, Mo., high school.

In 1953, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in Austria and Germany, and was discharged as a sergeant in 1955.

On Aug. 12, 1957, he was united in marriage to Jo Ann Noble. After their marriage, they lived near Agency in the former Stamper School House, and in 1963, they moved to the Frazier community in rural Agency. His wife, Jo Ann, passed away on Nov. 14, 2000.

Chester taught firearms safety and woodworking classes at the Stamper 4-H Club; worked 18 years at Hy-Klas Dairy in St. Joseph; 20 years at the Carnation Distribution Center in Elwood, Kan.; and was a bus driver for the East Buchanan School District for 13 years.

He was a member and deacon of the Frazier Baptist Church; was a past master of the Gower Masonic Lodge No. 397, A.F. & A.M.; served as a board member of the Gower Fire Protection District and was a member of the Gower American Legion Post No. 393.

Chester also was preceded in death by his parents; son, David; daughter, Ellen; and brothers, Roger and Lloyd.

He is survived by daughter, JoLynn Huwe of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Alien and Donna Barton, Agency; five grandchildren, Jessica, Emily, Bethany, Kelsey and Megan; brother, Raymond Barton, and wife, Norma; and sister-in-law, Barbara Barton, all of St. Joseph, Mo.; aunt and uncle, Paul and Marjorie McClanahan, Hemple, Mo.; other relatives; and many friends.

Funeral service: 11 a.m. Monday, at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Gower. Burial: Frazier Cemetery, with military honors. Masonic service: 6:30 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home, where visitation will follow until 8:30 p.m. Donations may be made to the cemetery.
