Edward J. Smith, 79, of 6286 Riverside Drive, formerly of Ogdensburg, died Monday at his home, where he was under the care of his family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
Mr. Smith was a therapy aide at St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, Ogdensburg, and then a heavy- equipment operator for 36 years, retiring in 1982. He resided at 600 Elizabeth St., Ogdensburg, from 1951 to 1982, when he moved to Morning Star Trailer Park. He moved to Canton in 1994.
Born March 18, 1923, in Madrid, son of Jesse and Lyola Cavanaugh Smith , he attended Madrid Central School.
He married Geraldine Powers on Feb. 14, 1948, at St. Benedict Joseph Labri Church, Long Island. She died July 23, 1993. He married Hilda O'Neil on Sept. 9, 1994, at St. Mary's Church.
He was a member and former exalted ruler of Elks Lodge 772, a communicant of St. Mary's Cathedral, Ogdensburg, a member of Sons of Amvets Post 4, Massena and Retreads motorcycle group and an avid stock car owner and driver in the 1950s and 1960s. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons and a daughter-in-law, two daughters and a son-in-law, a stepson, a stepdaughter and her husband, a brother, 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, a step- great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A brother, James, died before him. Another brother and a sister died in infancy.
A prayer service will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Fox-McLellan Funeral Home, Ogdensburg, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral, Ogdensburg, with the Rev. Scott Seymour officiating. Entombment will be in Foxwood Memorial Park, Ogdensburg.
