The funeral for Seward A. Sibley, 83, DePeyster, will be at the convenience of his family. Entombment with military honors will be in Foxwood Memorial Park, Ogdensburg.
Mr. Sibley died Friday at his home.
Mr. Sibley worked at the DePeyster creamery from 1947 to 1952, then at the Aiello cheese plant in Heuvelton from 1952 to 1957, and was a watchman at the former Diamond International plant, Ogdensburg, from 1957 to 1969.
In 1969 he started Sibley Electric Service in DePeyster and operated it until 1977 when he became a custodian and night watchman at Heuvelton Central School, retiring in 1991.
He was a member of the DePeyster United Methodist Church, where he served as trustee and former chairman of the administrative board. He served for more than 28 years as a civil deputy sheriff for St. Lawrence County, was a member and former president of the Ogdensburg chapter of REACT and enjoyed writing poetry, playing country music on his guitar at area nursing homes and using his computer.
Born Jan. 28, 1923, in Rossie, son of Seward R. and Carrie Backus Sibley , he attended school in Balmat and Gouverneur and graduated from Evans Mills High School. He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II, seeing action in Africa and Italy.
He married Irene M. Poore on June 26, 1948, at St. Raphael's Church, Heuvelton, with the Rev. Harold Martin officiating. Mrs. Sibley died Aug. 25, 2001.
Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, three daughters and their husbands, a sister, 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Two brothers, Russell and Harold, died before him.
