Sugar Ray Robinson
Original name: Walker Smith

Wayne County
Michigan, USA
Death: Apr. 12, 1989
Los Angeles
Los Angeles County

Welterweight and 5-time Middleweight Champion of the World. Robinson is hailed by fans and fighters alike as being, pound for pound, the greatest fighter in History. He earned the nickname Sugar Ray when a newspaper reporter described him as "sweet as sugar." He combined a dancers grace with a furious two fisted attack to defeat some of the top fighters of all time. In his 25 year career he took on a who's who of opponents. They include: Henry Armstrong, Fritzie Zivic, Jake Lamotta, Randy Turpin, Carl "Bobo" Olson, Carmen Basilio, Gene Fullmer, and Rocky Graziano. Robinson defeated all of the aforementioned fighters in either title defences or reclamations, and almost all of them by knockout. In total he fought 18 World Champions in his career. Robinson retired in 1965 with a tremendous career record of 175-19-6 with 109 KO's. He then settled in Los Angeles, started the Ray Robinson Youth Foundation and threw all his energies into working with kids and church. He died of Alzheimer's disease on April 12, 1989.In 1990, a year after his death, Robinson was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
