Ollie Rich Dickey, co-founder of Dickey's Barbecue, died Monday of Alzheimer's disease at the Forum in Dallas. She was buried Wednesday with private graveside service at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas. She would have been 92 on Dec. 28.
Mrs. Dickey was born in Weches, Texas, and grew up in Dallas, where she graduated from high school and attended business school.
She had worked for Dreyfus & Co. in Dallas, first as a secretary, then as a bookkeeper, said her son Travis D. Dickey Jr. of Dallas.
In 1941, she and her husband, Travis D. Dickey Sr., founded their barbecue business at the intersection of Knox Street ands what is now North Central Expressway, which at the time was the Cotton Belt Railroad.
Mrs. Dickey managed the company's books and raised the family.
When Mr. Dickey died in 1967, Mrs. Dickey took a leadership position in the family business.
"She was always our anchor," her son said. "She was a very astute businesswoman."
Having lived through the Depression, Mrs. Dickey had acquired a particular wisdom that kept the business moving forward with a conservative touch, her son said.
At the same time, "she liked the people," her son said. "She liked going to the stores. "She knew all the employees by name."
Dickey's Barbecue Pits now has 42 stores, including franchise outlets.
Mrs. Dickey retired in 1991.
She was an active member of Park Cities Baptist Church.
In addition to her son, Mrs. Dickey is survived by another son, Roland Rich Dickey of Dallas; a daughter, Elizabeth Mills of Dallas; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials made to the Park Cities Baptist Church, 3933 Northwest Parkway, University Park, TX. 75225; the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, 330 Union Station, 400 S. Houston St., Dallas, TX. 75202; of the Parkland Hospital Foundation, 5201 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas, TX. 75235.
