Augustus J. Robson, 83, of 35 Birchwood Drive, retired major with the New York State Police and former Gouverneur town justice, died at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday in Edward John Noble Hospital, where he had been a patient three days.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Foxwood Mausoleum chapel, Ogdensburg, with the Rev. Frederick Leach, Episcopal rector from Troy, officiating. Burial will be in Foxwood Memorial Park.
Surviving are two sons, two grandchildren, and several cousins.
A brother and two sisters died previously.
He was born Feb. 10, 1910, in Corona, Queens, a son of Walter and Christina Reichert Robson . He graduated from Flushing High School and was employed for a time by an insurance company.
Mr. Robson was a member of the Naval Reserve from 1928 to 1932 and in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1932 to 1936, including two years of active duty with the Marine Corps.
On March 2, 1939, he married Mary Kathleen Leclair of Heuvelton in the rectory of St. Raphael's Church, Heuvelton, with the Rev. Harold J. Martin officiating.
Mr. Robson joined the state police Aug. 1, 1936, serving his first 21 years with Troop B in Malone. He went on military leave with the Navy from March 1943 to January 1946, serving on troop transports in the South Pacific.
He returned to the police force and was promoted to corporal in 1946; to sergeant in 1950 and to lieutenant in 1957, while serving at the Gouverneur substation. He was then transferred to Troop K, Hawthorne, and assigned to the former station at Bay Shore.
In November 1958, Mr. Robson was transferred to Troop G, Loudonville, and assigned to thruway detail. Returning to Troop B in February 1961, he was promoted three months later to lieutenant-supervisor, a rank now corresponding to captain.
With his promotion to inspector in January 1963, he was transferred to division headquarters in Albany, remaining there until his promotion to the command of Troop C, Sidney, Aug. 18, 1964. He was promoted to major in June 1965.
Mr. Robson retired from the state police and as commander of Troop C at Sidney in 1971. He was named New York State "Trooper of the Year" that same year.
After his retirement Mr. Robson became caretaker of the Clark estate in Cooperstown from 1971 to 1975. He and his wife then returned to Gouverneur in 1975. Mrs. Robson, a former secretary, died Nov. 3, 1985, at age 70.
Mr. Robson attended Trinity Episcopal Church in Gouverneur and was a member of the National Association of State Troopers. He also formerly served as Gouverneur town justice.
