Joseph H. Rish, 79, of 916 Pickering St., died Sunday evening at St. Joseph 's Hospital, Syracuse.
Mr. Rish had owned Phillips Diner since 1972. He went to work as a cook at the Phillips' family- owned diner in 1949 and was known to cook at the diner until his recent illness.
He enjoyed boating and the St. Lawrence River. He was a former member of Elks Lodge 772 and a member of the American Legion and Amvets.
Born Nov. 26, 1924, in Ogdensburg, son of Joseph and Elizabeth Miller Rish , he attended St. Mary's Academy.
He left school to serve in the Army during World War II and was attached to the 71st Infantry in Europe under the command of Gen. George S. Patton.
A marriage in 1948 to Carol Phillips ended in divorce.
A marriage in 1975 to Diane Saber also ended in divorce.
He married Rhonda Sue Zoller on Sept. 21, 1997, at Alexandria Bay.
Surviving besides his wife are a son and his wife, four daughters and three sons-in-law, two sisters, 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A sister, June K. Harrington, and a brother, Willard F., died before him.
A prayer service will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Fox-McLellan Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral with the Rev. Scott R. Seymour as celebrant and deacon D. Thomas Sharrow, Mr. Rish's nephew, as homilist. Entombment will be in Foxwood Memorial Park.
