Son of James and Mary Willcocks Rhodes, John Abraham was married on Oct. 13, 1817 in Washington County, Kentucky to Louisa Edelen (with the consent of her mother), and they were members of Saint Rose Catholic Church in Springfield, where the baptismal entries of their three youngest children survive: Robert (Oct. 19, 1830), Benedict (Oct. 20, 1832), and William Thomas (June 15, 1835). In 1850 he purchased land adjoining Bee Knob, in Big Spring Precinct, Meade County, Kentucky. With an additional purchase in 1853 his property totaled 292 acres.
His great-grandfather William Willcocks, esquire (d. 1800) was a Judge Advocate during the Revolutionary War era.
