TEXAS CITY — Billie Joe McWhorter, 72, of Texas City died Sunday, March 18, 1990, at Veter ans Administration Hospital in Houston.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 1990, at the Memorial Chapel of Emken-Linton Funeral Home in Texas City. The Rev. Boyd Baker will officiate.

Burial will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery in League City.

Visitation is set for 5-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Born Jan. 13, 1918, in Greenville.

Mr. McWhorter was retired from Union Carbide after 36 1/2 years of employment.

His parents were Francis Marvin McWhorter and Sarah Dove Strong. He married Martha Lucille Warner Sept. 30, 1939; she passed away Jan. 1,1971.

Mr. McWhorter served with the 9th Infantry at Fort Sam Houston from October 1936 to September 1939. He was a sergeant with the military police at Camp Maxey and Fort Lewis, Wash., and with the 398th Medical Collecting Co. in the Asiatic/Pacific Theater of Operations in the Philippines and Japan from January 1943 to January 1946. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Texas City.

Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Mary Z. Johnson McWhorter of Texas City; daughters, Marianna Strong of Houston and Carolyn Johnson of Santa Fe; stepsons; Carl Johnson and Edward Johnson, both of Texas City; brothers, Fred McWhorter of La Marque and Marvin McWhorter of Nacogdoches; sisters, Lorena Lipscomb of Galveston and Marie Robinson of Greenville; grandchildren, Alan; Gary and Karen Strong, all of Huntsville, and Michial, Kevin and Kenny Johnson, all of Santa Fe; and ten step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers include Alan Strong, Gary Strong, Michial Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Kenny Johnson and Richard Johnson. Honorary pallbearers are Eric Johnson,
William Johnson and Mark Johnson.
