Obituary - Karl Heinz Mankel 1931 ~ 2007.

Karl Heinz Mankel passed away peacefully on Friday, 18 May 2007 at 75 years of age after an extended illness. Karl was born in Chicago IL on 13 October 1931 to Geraldine (Geibe) and Karl H. Mankel. He married Barbara Ann Belt-Mahaffey 31 January 1967. Karl is now survived by his wife Barbara, sons Kelly (Sue) Mahaffey, Gaylen (Robin), Mahaffey and Shannon (Jeanette) Mahaffey; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving is son, Karl A. Mankel and sister, Kathleen (Danny) White.
He served in the US Navy from 1949-1969 retiring as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, Missile Fire Control (FTCS). During his military service, Karl served aboard Missile Frigates and several destroyers both in the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets. After his retirement, he transferred to the Naval Fleet Reserve for 10 years until 1979 and was an avid patriot throughout his life.

Upon leaving military service, Karl earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Weber State College and was self-employed with A-Tech Services until retirement in 2000. He was active in many interests including golfing, reading, woodworking, and memberships with Kiwanis and International Toast-masters clubs. After his conversion in 1971, Karl served faithfully as an active member of The Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints. He served as a home teacher, Sunday School teacher, Elders Quorum president, High Priest group leader, high councilor, bishop's counselor, and temple worker.

A viewing will be held Thursday, 24 May 2007 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Deseret Mortuary, at 36 E. 700 S., Salt Lake City, UT, 84111. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, 25 May 2007, 10:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 3650 West 4700 South, Taylorsville, UT, 84118. A brief graveside service and interment will be conducted afterward in Bountiful, UT at Lakeview Memorial Park, 1640 East Lakeview Drive.
