Minnesota Governor. An educator, newspaper editor, and insurance commissioner, McGill was elected Governor of Minnesota in 1886. He took office on January 5, 1887. During his term, the state school tax was adopted, iron ore was discovered on the Mesabi Range, and a state normal school was opened in Moorhead, Minnesota. He left office on January 9, 1889. He was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 1898 and 1902 and was appointed postmaster of Saint Paul in 1900. (bio by: Thomas Fisher)
