James W. Pritty, 74, of 1689E Route 11, died Tuesday morning at E.J. Noble Hospital.

Mr. Pritty retired as a maintenance mechanic at Gouverneur Talc Co., Balmat, in 1983 after 25 years of service. Previously, he had worked at St. Joe Minerals, Balmat, for 13 years.

He was a life member, past commander and past veteran of the year at Gouverneur Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6338. He was also a past member of the Gouverneur American Legion. He enjoyed working in his metal shop, fishing, camping and traveling.

Born May 24, 1928, in Gouverneur, son of Wilbur and Lucille Lawrence Pritty , he attended schools in Fowler and Gouverneur. He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1946, stationed in Okinawa and Japan. He was honorably discharged.

On May 31, 1949, he married Elva Lawrence at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Robert Clyde Joudry, rector, officiating.

Surviving besides his wife are four daughters, a brother, two sisters, five granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.

Three sisters, Mildred Pritty in childhood, Dorothy Perkins and Mary Given, died before him.
